The recently renovated Kirby Sports Center Arena was re-dedicated Feb. 23 at a halftime ceremony during the men’s basketball game, a 77-71 victory over Lehigh.
The building’s construction in 1972 and major transformation 14 years ago were both funded by The F.M. Kirby Foundation. The arena’s renovation was again made possible by the foundation. Upgrades include new seating under the west basket, video scoreboard at center court, chairback seats, and an LED scorer’s table. Dillard Kirby ’81 and Jeff Kirby ’84 were on hand for the ceremony. President Alison Byerly and Bruce McCutcheon, director of athletics, presented them with basketballs autographed by the team members.
“I think the college ought to, and does, try to be the best it can be in all realms: athletics, academics, other extracurricular activities, and this is a small representation of how that’s going on throughout the college,” said Jeff Kirby. “Like our father, our grandfather, and our great-grandfather before us, we are awfully proud of that.”
