Cy Fleck ’52, Friend to All

CY FLECK ’52, A BELOVED MEMBER of the College family, died May 10 at age 79. In tribute to his devotion and service to Lafayette, the Board of Trustees renamed the East Wing of Marquis Hall as the Fleck Wing. He was an administrator for 44 years, including 32 years as registrar.

“Cy was so much more than just a Lafayette alumnus and employee. He cared deeply about our students, helping them get the most out of their undergraduate careers and then remembering them—and taking a personal interest in them—long after they graduated,” said President Daniel H. Weiss at the annual pre-Commencement dinner May 21. “He was truly an extraordinary person and a remarkable friend and will be missed by all of us who had the privilege of knowing him.”

A government and law graduate, Fleck returned to the College in 1961 as a development officer following MBA studies at Lehigh University and a stint in the army. He became registrar in 1965 and served in the role until 1997. At that time he became special assistant to President Arthur J. Rothkopf ’55 and served as director of study abroad. When he retired in 2005, Fleck was honored with the College’s Administrator of the Year Award, and the award was permanently renamed in his honor.
