During an externship at Straus News in Chester, N.Y., Cassidy Taylor ’17 (below, center), a double major in English and film and media studies and member of the women’s soccer team, and Adam Valavanis ’17, an international affairs major, attended editorial, magazine production, and sales meetings. They assisted in many areas, including proofreading copy on production day and researching administrator and teacher names at 20 different schools in the area.
“I love hosting Lafayette students even though my son graduated two years ago,” says Jeanne Straus P’13, president of the company, whose son is Colin Tofel ’13, an AB engineering graduate. “They are lovely additions to our team: upbeat and eager to help out.” Straus News publishes 14 local weekly newspapers and associated websites in contiguous towns in New York, New Jersey, and Pennsylvania.
“Internships are a valuable part of a young person’s package of experiences,” she says. “It signals a future employer that you know your way around an office and a little bit of that business.”
