Brittany Blass ’15 and Cory Spera ’15 have been named 2014 Maroon Club Scholar-Athletes of the Year.
Blass played midfield position on the field hockey team. She received the Athletic Bronze Award five times and earned the Athletic Gold Award in spring 2014. She is an Oaks Leadership Academy participant and was captain her junior and senior years.
A biochemistry major, she conducted EXCEL Scholar research with Chip Nataro, professor of chemistry, and was a chemistry lab teaching assistant. She was a research scholar with the Lehigh Valley Health Network and volunteers at St. Luke’s Hospital. Patriot League Preseason Defensive Player of the Year in 2013 and 2014, Blass earned a spot on the National Field Hockey Coaches Association All-Mideast Region squad in 2012 and was tabbed to the second team in 2013.
A pitcher, Spera earned the Patriot League Baseball Scholar Athlete Award in 2014 and was on the Patriot League Academic Honor Roll each of his first three seasons. A biology major, he conducted EXCEL Scholar research with Steve Mylon, associate professor of chemistry, and plans to attend medical school after working a year for Headfirst. A peer mentor and Gateway ambassador, he also participates in Oaks Leadership Academy.
Spera was an All-Patriot League First Team selection in 2014, and received the Harold “Moose” Hageman ’39 Award for Most Valuable Lafayette Pitcher last season. He is team captain for 2015.
