Elizabeth Kolbert Speaks on Orientation Theme: Extinction
Students in the Class of 2018 read the bestseller The Sixth Extinction: An Unnatural History in the summer before classes began. They discussed the book in small groups upon arrival and had the opportunity to participate in exhibitions, artistic performances, theater, and more in the following months.
On Feb. 5, they heard and interacted with the book’s noted author and journalist, Elizabeth Kolbert, who was interviewed on stage by David Sunderlin, associate professor of geology and environmental geosciences, whose research is related to evolution. Sarah Woodruf ’15, who has conducted research with Megan Rothenberger ’02, assistant professor of biology, on invasive crab species in Raritan Bay, N.J., interviewed the author for a video.

Staff writer for The New Yorker since 1999, Kolbert’s series on global warming, “The Climate of Man,” won the American Association for the Advancement of Science’s magazine award. Her visit was part of the Thomas Roy and Lura Forrest Jones Visiting Lecture series, founded by Trustee Emeritus Thomas Roy Jones in 1973.
