DURING A SABBATICAL in the Czech Republic and Slovakia, Skip Wilkins, associate professor of music, performed in a March 3 concert at Prague Castle in honor of Czech President Vaclav Klaus.
Wilkins calls the experience “a career highlight, no doubt.” An ardent jazz aficionado, Klaus hosted 91 jazz concerts, called Jazz na Hrade (jazz at the castle), during his 10 years in office. Only three groups were chosen for the final concert in the series, which has included such luminaries as Village Vanguard Orchestra, Mulgrew Miller with Ron Carter, Joe Lovano, and more.
Hundreds attended the event, which was broadcast live on Czech television and has already been released on CD in the Czech Republic. Wilkins performed with his group Super Trio – WUH, which includes bassist Frantisek Uhlir and drummer Jaromir Helesic.
In addition to the live performance CD from Jazz na Hrade, Wilkins is set to release Czech Dreams, a CD he recorded last year in Prague with the Skip Wilkins Quartet featuring Libor Smoldas.
