Alec Golini ’14, Cory Spera ’15, Amanda Magadan ’17, Hannah Millen ’16, and Kirby Szalkowski ’16 have received special recognition for their accomplishments.
Golini, a captain and a 2012 Men’s Soccer All-Patriot League first team member, received the Patriot League Outstanding Leadership and Character Award for contributions to the school, community, and athletic teams. He had three game-winning goals as a junior and also netted one during a 2-1 victory over Binghamton during his senior campaign.
In 2012, Golini founded a non-profit organization called Athletes CARE. The group provides food and clothing to the homeless. A government and law graduate, he was chosen to attend the Naval Academy Leadership Conference last winter.
Spera was named Patriot League Baseball Scholar-Athlete of the Year and earned a place on the Academic All-Patriot League Team.
A right-handed pitcher and biology major, Spera was named to the Patriot League Academic Honor Roll each of his first two seasons. He plans to attend medical school and volunteers as a Peer Mentor and Gateway Ambassador.
Spera appeared in 14 games out of the bullpen and pitched 23 2/3 innings. He compiled a 3-1 record with a 1.52 earned run average, including 16 strikeouts and four walks.
Three members of the field hockey team played in U.S. Field Hockey tournaments this summer. Magadan, a biology major, and Millen, an economics major, earned spots with the Women’s National Championship teams; Szalkowski, a neuroscience major, garnered a spot in the Under 21 Championship tournament.
The tournaments are selection trials for the U.S. Women’s National Squad and the Junior National Teams.
