Alumni Memorial Gym (now Oechsle Hall) was built in 1924 as a memorial to alumni who perished in World War I. Symbolism includes copper anthemia on the roof, a design used by the ancient Greeks on soldiers’ helmets; a frieze above the doors of a Greek battle scene; and Tiffany bronze doors dedicated to Wilson B. Gaither ’13, who died in the war. Alumni Memorial Plaza was dedicated in 1989.
During the 100th anniversary of World War I, this issue is dedicated to alumni–past and present–who serve our country here and abroad and to the memory of those who have died during that service.
