Goldwater Scholars

goldwaterZachary Sporn ’16 plans to become a physician and perform research on neurodegenerative disorders. Dana Lapides ’16 plans to be a professor and conduct research on nano-scale mathematical and physical problems.

They are one step closer to their goals after receiving a Goldwater Scholarship, the premier undergraduate award in the fields of mathematics, science, and engineering.
A biochemistry major, Sporn is working with Justin Hines, assistant professor of chemistry, on research related to neurodegenerative diseases such as Alzheimer’s.

Sporn has co-authored papers and presented research at the American Society for Cell Biology/International Federation for Cell Biology joint meeting. He participates in Alternative School Break.

Lapides, a mathematics major, worked with James Ferri, Marcus Professor of Chemical and Biomolecular Engineering, on research exploring ways to increase the stability of water/toluene emulsions. She won third place in the research paper competition at the 2014 AIChE Mid-Atlantic Regional Conference.

A Creative and Performing Arts Fellow, Lapides plays piano in Contemporary Music Ensemble. She spent a year studying abroad in Budapest, Hungary.
