Lafayette Outdoors Society
The Lafayette Outdoors Society (LOSt) is the go-to club for students looking to connect with the natural world. Programming like hiking, climbing, biking, camping, and, more recently, fishing, is meant for adventurers of all experience levels—the club even provides the necessary gear.
“It’s a wonderful reset,” says Rose Reohr ’26, president of LOSt. “There’s something so cleansing about being in nature and doing some sort of physical activity, especially after looking at a screen all day.”
Reaping the benefits of fresh air isn’t a new concept for Pards: Lafayette’s Outing Club, which was established in 1962, long offered experiences from canoeing the Delaware Water Gap to scaling New Hampshire’s Mount Lafayette.
For local excursions, LOSt members head to nearby trails and bike paths, a climbing gym in Allentown, or weekend camping trips to Wind Gap, Pa., just north of Easton.
Dedicated campers can join the club’s longer trips, including a yearly fall break visit to West Virginia and a star-gazing expedition to north central Pennsylvania state parks.
One of Reohr’s favorite events is the “LOStgiving” feast, when dozens of club members hike up a mountain in formal attire and share an enormous meal on the trail.
“All of these random hikers will come by and ask us what we’re doing, and we just tell them to grab some food and join us,” Reohr says.
The relationships forged on LOSt trips last long after graduation, with alumni in different enclaves across the country frequently meeting up to hike, ride, and climb together.
In that spirit, one of Reohr’s goals is to organize an official alumni weekend for past members to return to campus.
“It’s one of the biggest clubs on campus, and the people involved make it such a wonderful community,” Reohr says.
