Sabattis Named Director of Public Safety

Robert G. Sabattis, former director of the Department of Public Safety at New Jersey Institute of Technology, became Lafayette’s director of public safety in August.

“I look forward to working with all of the campus community in keeping Lafayette a safe place to work, live, and obtain a top-quality education,” said Sabattis.

Sabattis’ scope of responsibility includes police and security functions, investigations, emergency preparedness, environmental health and safety, and parking.

As director of public safety at NJIT, Sabattis supervised a staff of 72 officers. NJIT enrolls approximately 10,000 undergraduate and graduate students with roughly 1,700 students housed on campus in Newark, N.J. Following a 25-year career with the Police Department of Union, N.J., from 1978 to 2003, Sabattis was a practicing attorney at two New Jersey-based law firms through 2007.

Sabattis holds a JD from School of Law, Seton Hall University and BA from Kean College of New Jersey. He earned medals of Valor and Honor during his 25-year police career. He is past president of New Jersey College and University Public Safety Association.
