The Giving Tree

No one knows the exact age of the tree, but it dates far back into the 19th century, and perhaps is as old as the College itself. Lafayette is ensuring that through its wood, this tree continues to enrich the life of the College.

The tree might live on through its children. A biology project resulted in seedlings, which were planted outside Fisher Hall.

Here are some items repurposed from it:

A large turned-wood bowl made by Delano Schucker of Hidden Treasures Woodworking (gift of David Schneck, Schneck Logging, spouse of Carolyn Coffey ’85; and Lawrence Cancelliere, Superior Tree Service).
A frame containing a tribute to the elm written by David Schneck and Justin D. Cancelliere, made by Jeff Schucker of Bailey Wood Products.
A frame honoring Ed Ahart ’69 on the occasion of his retirement as chair of the Lafayette Board of Trustees, made by Schucker and commissioned by Lafayette.
A small turned-wood bowl made by Ed Youtz, Emmaus, Pa. (gift of Kate and Bruce ’62 Vakiener)
