SHIFTING INTO HIGHER GEAR

Thanks to a generous gift from the Acopian family, Lafayette Motorsports is expanding into a club format, which will enable more students to learn about sustainable engineering and transportation. Originally, the electric formula car was a mechanical engineering capstone project. Now, all students—regardless of class year or major—can participate in the design and creation (shown here in progress) of a car to compete in the Formula SAE (Society of Automotive Engineers) competition. Students who are interested in environmental issues, policy, infrastructure, and marketing can discover the benefits and challenges of new technologies and see the interplay of elements that go into engineering design firsthand.
